How do Sump Pumps Work?

A sump pump is a device designed to prevent basement flooding by removing accumulated water. It’s typically installed in a sump pit, which is a small, basin-like hole dug into the lowest part of a basement or crawlspace. The standard process that occurs in your home is the following:

  1. Water Collection: Groundwater or rainwater naturally collects around your home’s foundation and flows into the sump pit. The pit is strategically placed to gather excess water, preventing it from pooling in your basement.

  2. Activation: Inside the sump pit, the sump pump has a float switch that monitors the water level. When the water level rises to a certain point, the float triggers the pump to turn on.

  3. Pumping Water Out: Once activated, the sump pump uses an electric motor to power an impeller, which forces water up through a discharge pipe. The pipe directs the water away from your home’s foundation to a safe drainage area, such as a storm drain, dry well, or distant part of your yard.

  4. Shut-off: After the water level in the sump pit drops to a safe level, the float switch turns off the pump, stopping the discharge until the pit fills up again.

Sump pumps are a crucial line of defense against flooding, protecting your basement from water damage, mold growth, and structural issues. Regular maintenance ensures they operate efficiently when you need them most.
